Introducing Utah’s New Multicultural Affairs Deputy Director

Eddy Thompson is the new deputy director of the Division of Multicultural Affairs. He brings a track record of service to this new position. A Utah native, he brings a lifetime of commitment to building stronger, more connected communities. His mother, Dr. Jackie Thompson, was also deeply involved with the division, as she served on the Multicultural Commission instilling a passion for civic engagement that Eddy Thompson has carried forward throughout his career.

He followed his mother to serve on the MLK Commission and has been actively involved with the MCA for the past eight years, working to identify community gaps and create meaningful opportunities — especially for youth. Through partnerships with organizations such as the Utah Black Chamber, he has helped provide resources, education, and scholarships, including the France B. Davis Scholarship, guiding students from high school to college and connecting them with mentorship opportunities. 

Beyond scholarships, he is instrumental in organizing MCA’s Youth Leadership Summits, leading youth entrepreneurship programs for ages 11–17, and directing community heritage events. He also fosters collaboration across commissions, ensuring initiatives from the MCA and MLK Commission have a lasting impact. His work extends to planning equity-focused educational forums and creating platforms for youth leadership and civic engagement.

He serves on the University of Utah Alumni Board of Governors, strengthening connections between alumni, students, and the community while promoting educational and cultural initiatives. Recognized for his service and community impact with honors such as Utah Business Living Color and Afro Utah Festival’s Community Advocate, he embodies a dedication to connecting people, fostering opportunity, and advancing equity throughout Utah.
